Greenland stock extend surge as U.S. investment prospects brighten
Companies with mining and energy interests in Greenland have seen their stock prices skyrocket this week following the signing of a strategic pact between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland. In particular, Greenland Mines (GRML) and Greenland Energy Company (GLND) have gained well over 300% WoW.
- Greenland, the U.S., and Denmark signed a joint security pact at the United Nations on Tuesday, September 22nd. Denmark was party to the agreement because Greenland remains a Danish territory, although it has its own local government (1, 2).
- The agreement is primarily military in nature, allowing the U.S. to develop a missile system on the Arctic island and open two new military bases. But the deal is also expected to open doors for U.S. business investment, as it helps stabilize the relationship between the three nations and largely neutralizes President Trump's long-standing threats to take Greenland by force (1, 3).
- Greenland, which has ample supplies of oil, gas, and rare-earth minerals, has long been a target for development by Western and Chinese companies (4).
- Critical Metals (CRML), a mining exploration firm focused on southern Greenland, gained 39% on Monday but saw declines later in the week. However, Greenland Energy (GRML) continued rising to bring its 1-week surge to 342% — while Greenland Mines (GRML) rose 400% over the same period (5).
- Following the multinational agreement, Greenland Mines announced that it had applied to expand its footprint in western Greenland by over 100%, and Greenland Energy signed a pact with British mining firm 80 Mile (AIM:80M) (6, 7).
- The U.N.-signed deal will remain in effect even if Greenland becomes independent from Denmark, indicating possible long-term stability (3).
