The U.S. bans imports of certain Canadian alcohol, whey and motorcycles

The United States has banned imports of certain Canadian alcoholic drinks, molasses, whey products, non-alcoholic beer and larger-capacity motorcycles as of midnight on September 29 (1, 2, 3, 4).

• The goods, which were already subject to 50% tariffs, are now banned from being imported into the U.S. (1, 2, 3).
• In a statement, the White House claimed that Canada had maintained or increased discrimination against U.S. alcoholic beverages, dairy and motor vehicles that the 50% tariffs were meant to offset (1, 2, 3).
• Jacob Jensen of the American Action Forum puts the list at $967 million of Canadian imports based on 2025 figures, of which 87% is alcoholic beverages. It is a tiny fraction of the $880 billion two-way annual trade between the countries (4, 5).
• U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer called the moves "... a natural consequence of Canada's continued discriminatory treatment of crucial American exports" (5).
• BRP Inc. (DOO) confirmed that its three-wheel Can-Am Spyder and Canyon motorcycles "will be excluded from importation into the U.S." The company said the impact will mostly be felt next year because production and shipments for the current season are already done (4).
• President Trump has also threatened a 50% tariff on cars, trucks and auto parts, starting next year, CNBC reports (5).
