Earnings Call: Q1 2025

May 23, 2025

Summary

A quiet first quarter saw minimal trading and a small gain from share price movements. Several private investments are preparing to list soon, which is expected to increase portfolio liquidity in the next quarter.

Speaker 1

Hey, morning everybody. I see we got a relatively small group today. I don't have a lot of prepared remarks for today. The first quarter at Quinsam was very quiet, I would say. Essentially no changes to the historic unlisted securities portfolio, although a couple of them are now getting ready to list as we speak. Not a whole lot of trading activity in the quarter either. We ended up with a small gain, primarily relating to movements in the share prices of BluMetric and California Nanotechnologies. No major changes, I would say, of note in the portfolio other than those. On the private side, we do have four or five private companies that are looking to list here in the course of the next one to three months. Reflex Coil Solutions, which is a relatively recent purchase, that actually will be trading on Monday.

Obviously, with any new listing, you never know how things are going to go. We're quite optimistic about its business, which is the manufacturer of coiled tubing units for the oil patch. They're also pursuing a really quite interesting new business opportunity where they've designed a product that can be used to prevent forest fires. I think the easiest way to describe it is that it's like a extremely large sprinkler, you might say, with a tower that can be up to 200 feet tall, and it can spray mist over an area of up to 20 acres. That is a product that obviously could be quite appealing to towns or cities, or mines, anywhere that's in a forest fire risk area where they have some access to water from a lake or a river or something like that. That one trades Monday.

We're also getting very close to a listing by VVT Medical, which has a new treatment for varicose veins on the market. Quite innovative. That should be trading in probably the next two weeks. We're also getting close on Peninsula and TheraCann. Peninsula is the U.S. residential rental business, started in Buffalo and Rochester, but is now moving into other areas. They have become quite a significant landlord to thousands of residential tenants in the U.S., and they're looking at doing a listing through Canaccord CIBC in the course of the next, I'm going to say 90 days. They're just getting the marketing effort underway probably in June. The final one that we're expecting relatively soon is a company called TheraCann. It's a company that we purchased many years ago, as a cannabis-related company. We fully wrote it off probably four years ago.

It is looking to list with a quite innovative agricultural technology business where they're basically using the capabilities that they developed in cannabis to grow consumer vegetables in indoor environments. We're hoping that we're going to see a nice jump in the proportion of the portfolio that is in the liquid side, in the course of the next, let's call it 90 days. Still waiting on the two largest private investments to give us liquidity that would then allow us to go and do something new with Quinsam. Obviously, the market for new listings remains tricky. We're not in a rush to go and find a new business for Quinsam. We want to find just the right opportunity that has a chance to succeed in the public markets. We're not wanting to do something quickly just for the sake of getting it done. Any questions?

Okay, well, if there are no questions, thanks very much for attending and we'll be in touch later. Bye-bye.
