Investor Day 2023

Oct 24, 2023

Daniel Tugues
CEO, Aguas Andinas

No longer from urgency, which is what has dominated the public debate in recent times. It is more about restrictions, yes, restrictions, no. In other words, this urgency comes out saying, "Look, this is the challenge we face, and against this is our plan. This is our portfolio of projects that we propose, that it is written, that we are going to present it shortly and which is essentially about strengthening the city's resilience against extreme events. This essentially involves the work that was already planned, but we have improved it to provide a direct connection of the drinking water production plants with the El Yeso Reservoir, so that in a turbidity event we can have for the purposes practically an infinite reserve because we have what the El Yeso Reservoir provides, which can be three months. We are talking about events that we measure in hours.

Here we had what is committed to the survival standard, which is 37 hours, with a request to reach 48. We already see that 48 at some times is because we have received events of 3, 4 days. Therefore, the level of security that we are going to promote is much higher than that. Finish the Resilience Plan against turbidity and drought. There are very long-term solutions. This can come from storage, but what we are going to launch right now is a medium-term plan. Things that we should do in the medium term are to take much more advantage of this underground reservoir that we have under our feet, that it is a central aquifer. This is a large aquifer which decreases in its reserves, but still has many.

It can be a great source, but by having greater exploitation of this resource, it gives us time to develop other solutions that finally provide sustainability to the community, carry out major works that may be in design, but that cannot be executed in the medium term, new batteries of wells at different points of the aquifer where we know that there are sufficient reserves if possible. And this has also meant a range of solutions based in nature, essentially infiltration techniques between aquifers to try to make it sustainable. If we were only going to exploit the aquifer more and did not do the other part, it would be a false solution which would prolong the problem, but would not solve it in a stable and sustainable way.

And finally, to finish making all of that compatible, the balances of supply and demand, one goes to the work, to the infrastructure, to the supply, but we also have to touch on the demand side. I believe that we have already been preaching this as a company in the need for all clients, all people, let's say, who interact with water to realize that this reality that we are experiencing is different from the historical one and that therefore the relationship with water has to be different, starting with ourselves, with all the water efficiency plans that we already have in place and that we are accelerating and even going deeper in these coming years.

Thank you very much, Daniel.

And, just as context, without going into the financial part that we will later see in a specific panel, what amount of investment in the medium term we are talking about? Just so that the public has an idea of the magnitude of these projects that the company is already working on, as you mentioned before.

Daniel Tugues
CEO, Aguas Andinas

It is difficult to give an amount, especially because there are many of these projects that are still proposals. These still have to go through the validation of the regulator where they may require some adjustment or change. They have to go through an issue that is very fashionable now in Chile, which is environmental permitting processing, which is becoming very complex, and in which one can really end up doing projects that are significantly different from those that could be planned, but not to avoid the question.

Speaking in orders of magnitude, we see that this is a challenge, that of adaptation to climate change in this medium term. It is a challenge similar to the one we originally experienced in this company, which was a sanitation challenge.
