Binance net outflows reach $4.7B following its $6.3B hack
Binance has seen $4.7B in net outflows since reopening withdrawals on Sunday, following last week's $6.3B hack.
- Customers had withdrawn a net $4.7B by Monday morning, according to a Binance spokesperson, Bloomberg reported (1).
- That includes a $1.1B exodus above the $3.6B in net outflows Binance reported from 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. UTC on Sunday, November 1 (2).
- The net $4.7B of outflow represents about 2.8% of the $166B in assets Binance holds (1).
- Binance founder Changpeng Zhao took to X on Sunday, 12 hours after withdrawals had resumed, writing "98% choose to stay! Trust isn't earned by what you say in good times. It's earned by what you do in hard times" (3).
- Zhao's "98%" figure has already slipped to 97.2%, and isn't a clean measure of loyalty. It's a dollar-based figure rather than a customer headcount, one that can mask gross withdrawals with new deposits.
- The FBI has attributed last week's $6.3B exploit to North Korean hackers. Digital asset exchange Bybit lost nearly $1.5B to a heist also linked to North Korea last year (1, 2).
- Sunday's flows may not be the final read. Individuals can pull coins within minutes, even on a weekend, but larger institutions, funds, and market makers often need risk and compliance teams to weigh in. Meaning, as withdrawals return in phases, outflow could reaccelerate in the coming days.
- Bitcoin this morning sits at $77,908 per coin, a 10.87% decline year-to-date (4).
