Starbucks explored an acquisition of Chipotle. Chipotle gained 6%+ on the news, while Starbucks dropped

The Financial Times reported that Starbucks has been exploring an acquisition of Chipotle Mexican Grill (1, 2).

  • Chipotle (CMG) shares rose over 6% on the news and Starbucks (SBUX) shares fell over 2%.
  • Starbucks has a market cap of $103B and revenue of $38B, while Chipotle has a market cap of $41B and revenue of $12B.
  • Brian Niccol, who is CEO of Starbucks, is also the former CEO of Chipotle where he oversaw massive growth over 6 years. Starbucks shares gained 24% on the day it was announced that he would be joining as CEO in 2024 (2).
  • According to Semafor, people close to Chipotle have said that Chipotle has not received a takeover bid (3).
  • If this acquisition were to go through, it would be the biggest ever in the restaurant sector.
