About Character.AI
Character.AI is an AI chatbot platform where people create and talk with virtual characters. Users can design their own characters or chat with millions made by others, including personas for roleplay, storytelling and companionship. The company has been repositioning itself as an AI entertainment service, adding video generation, interactive stories and studio-made short series built around its characters. Character.AI makes money mainly through its c.ai+ subscription, which costs $9.99 per month for faster responses and premium features, plus a growing advertising business. The company was founded by former Google researchers Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, who returned to Google in 2024 as part of a $2.7 billion deal that licensed the company's model technology and paid out its early investors.
