About Quaise Energy
Quaise Energy is a geothermal energy company developing a drilling system that uses high-power millimeter waves to vaporize rock rather than cut it with a conventional drill bit. The approach comes out of more than a decade of gyrotron research at MIT's Plasma Science and Fusion Center. It is meant to reach superhot rock at 300 to 500 degrees Celsius, where a single well can produce power at a density closer to a fossil fuel or nuclear plant than to conventional geothermal. Quaise is also a project developer. Its first plant, Project Obsidian, is under construction on federal geothermal leases near the Newberry Volcano in central Oregon and is designed to deliver 50 megawatts by 2030 before scaling to 250 megawatts. The company has no revenue yet and plans to make money by selling electricity under long-term power purchase agreements, having already signed an offtake agreement for Obsidian's first 50 megawatts.
