Why does a stock’s price target not match the rating?

Updated July 8, 2026

Ratings such as “Strong Buy” are based on Wall Street analyst ratings. Stock prices can change quickly, but analysts often only update their ratings every few months. This can cause a mismatch in the rating vs. the price upside/downside.

If the price has decreased a lot recently, then any analyst ratings issued before that happened are best ignored (because something material has likely changed with the stock).
