Bloomberg reports that Meta Platforms (META) has banned ads and paid marketing messages for TikTok and other properties operated by ByteDance (1).

  • ByteDance remains in charge of key parts of TikTok in the United States.
  • The ban takes effect in the United States, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam.
  • The restriction also applies to other third-party advertisers that link to TikTok and other ByteDance properties.
  • Meta spokesperson Chris Sgro said in a statement: "We don't have to run ads from a competitor whose goal is to pull people off our apps." He said declining ads to a competitor is a normal business practice (1).
  • Last month, TikTok eliminated Instagram links from users' profiles and rejected ads from Meta that demanded TikTok commit to child-safety concessions.
  • The ban applies to Meta's social media platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. Ads on these platforms have historically been major growth drivers for TikTok.
