About Caribou
Caribou is an online marketplace for refinancing car loans. Drivers enter details about themselves and their vehicle, and Caribou runs a soft credit check that returns pre-qualified offers from its network of credit unions, community banks and other finance partners without affecting the borrower's credit score. Caribou is a licensed loan broker rather than a lender, so the loan itself is made by the partner institution while Caribou handles the payoff of the old loan, the title transfer and the DMV paperwork. It also sells optional vehicle protection products alongside a refinance, including extended service contracts, key replacement, total loss protection and cosmetic care coverage. Caribou makes money from the lending partners whose refinance loans it originates and from those optional protection products. Borrowers pay no application or upfront fee to Caribou. The company launched in 2016 as MotoRefi, a venture built inside fintech investor QED Investors through its Belay formation-stage platform, and took the Caribou name in November 2021.
