About Clear Labs
Clear Labs is a genomics company that automates next-generation sequencing for laboratories that test for pathogens. Its Clear Dx platform combines robotic sample and library preparation with built-in Illumina or Oxford Nanopore sequencers and cloud software that processes the results, so a lab can sequence pathogens in about a day without a dedicated bioinformatics team. The company started in food safety with Clear Safety, an AOAC-certified test that detects and serotypes Salmonella and Listeria for food manufacturers and contract labs. It has since applied the same platform to COVID-19 testing, public-health and hospital pathogen surveillance under the Clear Ix brand, and oncology sequencing workflows. Clear Labs makes money by placing the instrument, which the company says lists in the six figures, and then supplying nearly all of the reagents and consumables each run needs, plus service and support contracts.
