About Function of Beauty
Function of Beauty is a personal care company that sells custom-formulated hair, skin and body care products. Customers fill out an online quiz covering their hair type, hair goals, fragrance and color preferences. An algorithm turns those answers into a formula that the company mixes and bottles to order in its own production facilities, with the customer's name printed on the bottle. Function of Beauty makes money by selling those made-to-order products directly through its website, largely on repeat subscriptions, and by selling ready-made collections wholesale through Target, Sephora, Amazon and Walmart. It was started by two MIT engineers and a cosmetic chemist, and it moved into personalized skincare by acquiring Atolla in 2021.
