About Portal Space Systems
Portal Space Systems is a spacecraft company that builds rapidly maneuverable vehicles for defense, civil and commercial missions. Its flagship Supernova platform uses solar thermal propulsion to heat a storable propellant with concentrated sunlight. That gives the vehicle enough delta-v to move from low Earth orbit to cislunar space. The company also makes Starburst, a smaller ESPA-class bus for rapid maneuvering within a single orbital regime. Portal makes money by selling spacecraft and in-space mobility missions to government and commercial customers. It was founded in 2021 by former SpaceX propulsion executive Jeff Thornburg along with Ian Vorbach and Prashaanth Ravindran.
