About Redwood Materials
Redwood Materials is a battery recycling and materials company that aims to build a closed-loop supply chain for lithium-ion batteries in the United States. The company collects end-of-life batteries and manufacturing scrap, then recovers critical minerals like lithium, nickel, cobalt and copper. It makes money by refining these materials and selling battery components such as cathode active material back to cell manufacturers, including Panasonic. In 2025 it launched Redwood Energy, a second business line that repurposes used EV battery packs into large-scale energy storage systems for AI data centers and the power grid. Redwood was founded by JB Straubel, the co-founder and longtime CTO of Tesla, and Andrew Stevenson.
