About Top Hat

Top Hat is a Canadian education technology company whose software turns college lectures into interactive classes. Professors use it to run polls, quizzes, discussions and attendance checks on students' own phones and laptops, and to assign interactive textbooks drawn from Top Hat's own catalog, OpenStax open educational resources and publisher titles such as Wiley's psychology and anatomy lists. Its AI assistant, Ace, converts static course files into interactive and accessibility-compliant material for instructors and gives students a chat-based study tutor tied to their assigned readings. Top Hat makes money mainly by charging students for platform access, priced at $35 for a four-month term up to $96 for four years, and by selling institution-wide licenses to colleges that pick up that cost on their students' behalf.
