About Valve
Valve is a video game developer and the company behind Steam, the dominant digital storefront for PC games. It built its reputation on influential franchises such as Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Portal, Team Fortress, Left 4 Dead and Dota 2, and it has moved into gaming hardware with products like the Valve Index VR headset and the Steam Deck handheld. Valve makes money mainly by taking a commission on game and in-game item sales made through Steam, which it supplements with revenue from its own games and hardware. The company was founded in 1996 by former Microsoft employees Gabe Newell and Mike Harrington, has never taken outside venture funding and remains privately held in Bellevue, Washington.
