About Etched
Etched is a semiconductor company that designs inference chips and rack-scale systems built specifically for transformer AI models. Its flagship chip, Sohu, hardwires the transformer architecture directly into silicon. The company says a single server of Sohu chips can replace many general-purpose GPUs for large-model inference, cutting the cost and power of running models like ChatGPT. Etched makes money by selling complete inference systems built around these chips to AI labs and data center operators. Etched currently has a working chip and more than $1 billion in signed customer contracts. Its systems now run open models such as DeepSeek, Qwen, Llama and Mamba. The company was founded in 2022 by Gavin Uberti, Chris Zhu and Robert Wachen, and is headquartered in San Jose, California.
