About Flapping Airplanes
Flapping Airplanes is an AI research lab working on ways to train large models with far less data and computing power than today's systems need. The company estimates that humans learn 100,000 to 1,000,000 times more efficiently from data than current models, and its researchers are testing new approaches to close that gap, down to rethinking loss functions and gradient descent. It has also built its own megakernel software for Nvidia GPUs, which runs training and inference inside a single GPU program so the chips sit idle less often. Flapping Airplanes does not yet sell a product. It plans to make money by eventually selling its technology to companies that want to train and run AI more cheaply, in areas such as enterprise software, robotics, trading and scientific discovery. The lab was founded in 2025 by brothers Ben and Asher Spector and Aidan Smith. Ben Spector previously founded the student startup accelerator Prod.
