About Physical Intelligence

Physical Intelligence is an artificial intelligence company that builds general-purpose foundation models for robots. It does not make robots itself. Instead it trains vision-language-action models, released as the π (pi) series, that take a plain-language instruction and turn it into the motor commands a physical machine needs to carry out a task. Its models are trained on data collected from robot arms and mobile manipulators in kitchens, laundromats, warehouses and homes, and the company's pitch is that one generalist model can control many different robot platforms rather than each machine needing its own bespoke software. The first model, π0, was released in October 2024 and open-sourced in February 2025, and later versions have added reinforcement learning from real-world experience, long-horizon memory and the ability to follow instructions for tasks never seen in training. Physical Intelligence does not sell a commercial product yet and has said it has no timeline for commercialization, so it has no revenue. It funds its research entirely from venture capital and works with a small number of robotics companies, including Weave in laundry folding and Ultra in warehouse order packaging, to test the models in live deployments. The company was co-founded by UC Berkeley professor Sergey Levine, Stanford professor Chelsea Finn, former Google DeepMind researchers Karol Hausman and Brian Ichter and early Stripe employee turned investor Lachy Groom.
