About Saildrone

Saildrone is a maritime autonomy company that builds and operates a fleet of wind and solar powered uncrewed surface vehicles, often called ocean drones. Its vehicles come in three sizes and carry sensor payloads that detect and measure conditions above and below the waterline. This data is useful for defense, maritime security, ocean mapping and climate science. Saildrone makes money mainly through a data-as-a-service model. It owns and operates the vehicles itself and charges customers such as navies, government agencies and scientific organizations for ocean data, mission services and persistent maritime surveillance. The company was founded in 2012 by Richard Jenkins, who still serves as chief executive, and is headquartered in Alameda, California.
