About Lumotive
Lumotive is a semiconductor company that makes programmable optical chips for steering beams of light. Its Light Control Metasurface chip, sold commercially as the LM10, uses electronically controlled nanoscale structures to steer light with no moving parts, so lidar and other 3D sensors can be built without spinning mirrors or mechanical scanners. Lumotive makes money by selling those chips, development kits and reference designs to sensor makers and system builders such as Hokuyo, Namuga and E-Photonics. It is also applying the same technology to optical circuit switching in AI data centers, where it demonstrated a two-dimensional photonic beamforming chip in March 2026. The company was spun out of Bellevue-based Intellectual Ventures in late 2017 with seed funding from Bill Gates, whose Gates Frontier fund is still an investor.
